Llangollen has reasonably good bus links to Wrexham and Ruabon (both with train stations) and in the other direction rather less frequent buses to Corwen, Bala, Dolgellau and Barmouth. Cross the bridge over the Dee.Walk past the shops and turn left on the Oswestry road then right up the hill towards Plas Newydd. Keep bearing left, but go past the sign on the left at the entrance to Plas Newydd. Cross a stream.
At SJ 21973 41179 take the second right (not the road marked ‘Unsuitable for Motor Vehicles’ but the next one). Follow this very steep but pleasantly shady hollow lane up the hill.
At SJ 21890 40309 the road bears left into the wood. Take the waymarked footpath straight on (you may have to climb over the fence). The path climbs steeply along the outer edge of the forest fence. Go through the sheep pens at the top then keep right of the fence across open land.
At SJ 22130 39607 cross a minor road and take the footpath straight ahead. Follow it along the hedge and across a field to Brynarddyn. Turn left into the farm lane and follow it to the road, then across the road. At SJ 22317 38832 bear left down a metalled lane marked ‘Not Suitable for Motor Vehicles’ following waymarks for Llwybr Ceiriog, the Ceiriog Trail.
At SJ 22602 37884 the metalled lane bears left to Pen-y-brongyll. Go straight on along a track, overgrown in places. This crosses two more roads and joins the B4500 in Dolywern. Take the road to cross the bridge over the Ceiriog.
At SJ 22065 37214 take the minor road left towards Llwyn-mawr. A tempting footpath goes right and into the Woodland Trust's Coed Collfryn: but this involves a lengthy diversion along the Ceiriog Way. Better to stay on the road, turn right up Pentre Lane and through Pentre Cilgwyn.
At SJ 22180 36732 walk across the road junction and take the minor road to Bedwlwyn.
At SJ 22025 36439 cross the B4579 and walk straight on up the lane (another permitted route for walkers and cyclists). At SJ 21737 36122 turn left with the lane in front of a small plantation of trees. The lane bears round to the right, past a radio mast and through a small belt of conifers.
At SJ 21885 35167 cross a minor road and and walk along a track through some recently-planted trees and across farm land. At SJ 22375 34044 turn left onto the road at Llechrhydau then right almost immediately along a bridle path. At SJ 22377 33972 the bridle path bears left. Keep straight on along the track here. Very soon, at SJ 22377 33919, the track divides. Bear left - you are now on the Upper Ceiriog Way, Llwybr Ceiriog Uchaf. About 1.6 km from Llechrhydau, at SJ 22500 32534, you cross another track. The Ceiriog Way bears right here and goes down hill. Bear left here and follow the track across the fields.
At SJ 22872 32354 turn right along the fence which marks the border between England and Wales. The track bears left and gradually downhill, eventually becoming a metalled road just above Rhydycroesau, the traditional border meeting place. You have now crossed the border into England.
